The move from H-E-L-L

Hello everyone-

As I write this today we are at a great bungalo in White Salmon. We're drinking wine, eating home made bbq, Ella's zonked out on the couch, and we're looking back over the past few days marveling that we survived.

As you saw in the last post Anna got very ill (swine flu?) on Sunday AM and ended up missing both Sunday and Monday nights of work... her last 2 nights. She (believe it or not) was bummed to miss her last night at work, but she was too zonked out to go in. Also, to add insult to injury, guess who got what Anna had? Yup! Ella. On Tuesday she came down with whatever Anna had, and was completely miserable... she was walking around the house going "ouwie mama, ouwie mama." Talk about breaking one's heart. The kid lived on a combination of tylenol and motrin for 3 days...

So there we were trying to move out of the house, pack for an 8 week trip, finish residency, all while taking care of a sick baby (and mama). Needless to say I was running around like the proverbial chicken sans head. On Tuesday, Anna was completely unable to do a thing as Ella wouldn't let her put her down... so those of you who know just how opposite Anna and I are in terms of cleanliness, imagine poor Anna sitting on the couch with a burning up baby and a husband running around the house litterally stuffing stuff in our car. It wasn't pretty.

So thank goodness the movers did all the packing and moving, which freed us up to plan for our trip. I've never so badly in my life wished for a Hummer with 2 rocket boxes on the roof. Our car is stuffed to the gills... with what, I have no idea... but apparently we need it ALL for the next 8 weeks.

For all of you who tried to contact us over the past few days (Justin, Keren, my mom, Janice, Baba, Leslie/Tamara, and Dean... and anyone else) we are sorry to not call you back. As you can tell from this blog posting, we didn't have much time to call back.

So, we finally got out of the house today... the house has been cleaned... by a saintly woman and her assistant. Most of the holes are patched and re-painted ("most" being a bit of an over statement). We officially do not live at 6525 NE Skidmore St... in fact we are currently homeless (except for the fact that we have much of the contents of our previous home stuffed in our car).

As the mantra we kept repeating promised "we will get through this... we will get through this" came true, we are officially done, and on our vacation.

I've added some pictures of the craziness. You'll see the house pre and post move, and the hotel we stayed in. For some strange reason Anna and I thought we'd be able to stay in the house while the move was on... "we'll just sleep in the blow up mattress... it'll be fun," yeah right!

Anna takes her boards on Monday... please pray to who ever you pray to that she passes that sucker. She hasn't cracked a book in weeks... and every time we go to Jim and Patty's, Laura's there reading, taking notes, and scaring the bajeezus out of Anna that she's going to fail.

Next we head to MI for some mid-west fun...

Take care...

Matt and Anna and Ella

Anna's banquet

Anna, Janice and Ella

Hey everyone... Anna had her graduation banquet on Saturday eve. This means that she's unofficially done with residency. "Unofficially" because she's got 2 more shifts. It was a great evening, with good food/drink and good people. Dr. Martha Goetsch gave a nice speech in Anna's honor highlighting her long road to and through medical training.

Highlights of that speech:
Anna picking a perfect specialty in medicine as she was born on Labor Day
How Anna's time in Sierra Leon made her want to be a doctor
The fact that Anna doesn't "suffer fools lightly," except for her choice in husbands (I had to head Philps off at the pass on that one)
Anna's wilderness EMT training, which was followed by 6-months teaching adaptive skiing... "she'll for sure make more than $50 per month and a free ski pass now"
(WE'RE DONE!!!!)
Unfortunately Anna seems to have gotten the flu and is completely zonked out in bed... she missed work last night (which took an act of congress.) Thanks to Jen K, Jenny Mayo, and Renee for covering her shift. She seems to think she'll be able to work tonight, but she looks like death warmed over... so we'll see how that works.

We'll be moving out of the house Wednesday and Thursday this week, and turn the keys over to the new owner on Friday... wish us luck with all the moving stuff.

I've attached a few pics from banquet.

This is a test

Okay... so i'm still trying to figure out how this blog works. So if you wouldn't mind doing me a quick favor when you get this: please respond with "got it." then I'll know if you're getting this or not.
thanks

Holy Crow... Anna's got 2 more shifts after tonight!

We are soooo close. I finish at the VA tomorrow, and even though leaving comes with a heavy heart, I truly look forward to Anna being done. She's been busting her ass for 11 years to become a doctor, and on Tuesday it becomes a reality... I know, I know, she's a doctor now, but after Tuesday she's not a doctor in training.

Ella is doing well... unfortunately she has no idea that we are about to pick up and leave, so we hope the transition isn't too hard on her.

For those interested here's our itinerary:
June 26th - hand over the keys to the house
6/26-28 White Salmon where we'll lay low and Anna will sleep and study for the boards
6/29-30 - in Portland for the Boards
6/30 - 7/9 - Michigan visiting Anna's family
7/10 - 19 - Dowling family in Sunriver to celebrate Baba's 70th... and to eat, drink, and be really active
7/19-22 - Olympic National Park
7/22-24 - Seattle with Darren... hopefully sailing
7/24-26 - Alaska Ferry from Bellingham to Ketchikan
7/27 - Matt does a guided fly fishing trip... gotta love my wife
7/28-31 - NE Heckman Lake (backcountry cabin for 3 days)
8/3 - 5 - Wrangell Alaska - Anan Bear Refuge (www.fs.fed.us/r10/ro/naturewatch/southeast/anan/anan.htm)
8/6-9 - Juneau AK (we were supposed to go with Whale Song Adventures, but the guy totally blew us off, and gave our spots away on his boat... I suspect he didn't want a 17-month old crimpin' his style)
8/10-20 - I have no idea... we'll be driving from the top of the inside passage from Haines AK, through Anchorage, down the Kenai to Homer, and back to Anchorage... we'll keep you posted.

I've attached a video of Ella swimming... hope you enjoy.
